On behalf of the government of Mexico, the Foreign Ministry deplores and condemns in the strongest terms the nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).
This nuclear test, North Korea’s sixth ever, is an irresponsible and hostile act that goes against the calls of the international community for North Korea to put a halt to its nuclear weapons program and to the development of ballistic missiles.
North Korea’s nuclear tests are unacceptable; a threat to international peace and security; are in flagrant violation of international law and multiple binding UN Security Council resolutions; and hamper the multilateral efforts to bring about a climate of stability and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.
Mexico reiterates that North Korea is required to comply with the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council since 2006, which require North Korea to suspend its nuclear weapons program, ballistic missile launches, and any other act of provocation.
Given North Korea’s repeated flagrant violations of international law, Mexico is analyzing possible bilateral diplomatic measures.
Mexico reiterates its solidarity with the Republic of Korea and Japan with regard to these reprehensible acts and calls on the members of the UN Security Council to condemn this nuclear test and adopt the necessary measures so that North Korea ends this type of action.
