On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry conveys its condolences to the people and governments of the Caribbean islands hit by Hurricane Irma and mourns the loss of life and the destruction left in the path of the hurricane.
Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray has instructed embassy staff in Cuba and Puerto Rico to hold relief events to assist the people there.
The Mexican government will be attentive to how the situation there evolves and will continue to promote stronger natural disaster rapid response mechanisms in the region.
In addition, aside from a civic ceremony, Mexico’s Independence Day will not be celebrated either in those countries or in Houston, Miami and Orlando. Only civic ceremonies will be held in Mexico’s consulates.
