Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray will travel to Washington, D.C. and New York on October 2-3 for meetings with U.S. government officials; U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue; officials from The City University of New York (CUNY); DACA beneficiaries; and immigrant rights organizations.
In Washington, D.C. this afternoon, the Foreign Secretary will meet with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Jared Kushner, Senior Advisor to the President, to convey Mexico’s condolences for the tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada and to follow up on key issues of the bilateral relationship.
With the President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Foreign Secretary Videgaray will talk about the process of modernizing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
On Tuesday in New York, the Foreign Secretary will meet with CUNY officials to make progress with ways to provide legal counseling to Mexican immigrants in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
He will also talk with “Dreamers” and immigrant rights defenders about the steps being taken by the Mexican government to assist them in the United States and to promote a Congressional solution that provides them with permanent legal certainty, while ensuring absolute respect for US sovereignty.
Also in New York City, Foreign Secretary Videgaray will attend a special showing of the Cristóbal de Villalpando: Mexican Painter of the Baroque exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise money for the victims of the September 19 earthquake in Mexico.
With these steps, the Foreign Ministry reinforces the Mexican government’s commitment to work together with the United States in a comprehensive fashion on issues of common interest and to enhance the protection of its citizens in the United States, regardless of their immigration status.
