At a commemoration of the 72nd anniversary of the United Nations, Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray Caso said that, given the current international scenario and the voices that question the effectiveness of multilateralism and advocate isolationism, Mexico reiterates its deep multilateral vocation. He stressed that our country is committed to making the UN’s principles and goals a reality and that it is ready to take the lead on issues such as migration, climate change, nuclear disarmament and human rights, among others.
The commemoration was attended by Senate President Ernesto Cordero; Chamber of Deputies President Jorge Carlos Ramírez Marín; Senator Laura Angelica Rojas, President of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations – International Organizations; Antonio Molpeceres, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Mexico; and Ambassador Olga Pellicer, Research Professor at the ITAM.
Foreign Secretary Videgaray then inaugurated the third dialogue on “The New Alignment of the United Nations System for 2030 Agenda: Contributions and Challenges,” part of a series of forums on implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Francisco Guzmán Ortiz, the President’s Chief of Staff, also attended the inauguration.
In his welcoming remarks, the Foreign Secretary said that to comply with the 2030 Agenda, civil society, the United Nations and government agencies must all work together. He expressed his support for the UN reforms presented by the UN Secretary-General to help governments form partnerships with all of the sectors involved in implementing the 2030 Agenda.
Under President Enrique Peña Nieto’s leadership, efforts have been made to ensure that the government continues striving to achieve the SDGs by creating a national council to implement the 2030 Agenda; aligning the federal budget with the agenda; and promoting an initiative to reform the planning law so that the administrations to come include the principles of sustainable development in their National Development Plans.
