On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry strongly condemns the 14th launch of a ballistic missile by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) today over Japan.
This type of action by North Korea, in addition to the September 3 nuclear test, are challenges that jeopardize international peace and security and hinder multilateral efforts to bring about an environment of stability and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.
Mexico reiterates that, as a United Nations member State, North Korea is obligated to fully comply with international law and the many resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council since 2006, including resolution 2375 adopted on September 11. These resolutions require North Korea to suspend ballistic missile launches, its nuclear weapons program and any other act of provocation.
Mexico has been consistent in implementing the Security Council sanctions against North Korea, and has taken a number of additional bilateral measures, such as not accrediting a Mexican ambassador in North Korea, reducing North Korea’s embassy staff in Mexico and, more recently, expelling the North Korean ambassador to Mexico.
Mexico reaffirms its solidarity with the people and governments of Japan and the Republic of Korea with respect to North Korea’s completely inadmissible actions.
Mexico will be attentive to the Security Council’s follow-up to this new provocation and, as a responsible member of the international community, reiterates its commitment to continue taking the measures necessary to fully comply with the resolutions adopted by the Council.
